Inter Milan

Inter Milan is ”almost”  a 100 years old now! Here are some highlights of the past century in the life of the one of the worlds most successfully and biggest club!

Internazionale Milano Football Club, more commonly known as Inter Milan or Inter was formed by a rebellious group on 9 March 1908 in the back room of L’Orologiaio (The Clockmaker) restaurant in Milan. The group was p****d off at the way Milan Cricket and Football Club (Now AC Milan) did not allow foreign players to play. Therefore they decided to go against the odds and form a new club open to foreign players.

At that time AC Milan’s regulations excluded all but Italian players - hence the name Internazionale developed . Even today, the club remain true to this original doctrine with more foreign players on their books (23 out of a professional playing staff of 45) than any other Italian club.

A 100 years after the club was born, Inter are ranked firmly among Europe’s top clubs, with an impressive portfolio of 15 Scudetti, 5 Italian Cups, 3 Italian Supercups, 2 European Cups, 3 UEFA Cups and 2 Intercontinental Cups.

On top of that, the Nerazzurri (Inter’s nick name) are Italy’s third most successful outfit in terms of cups, only behind Juventus and derby rivals AC Milan.
Not only that, they are also the only side in the country never to have been relegated.

Traditionally Inter has been a key provider of talent for the Italian National side, four of the players (Allemandi, Castellazzi, Demaria and Meazza) wining side at the 1934 FIFA World Cup in Italy were supplied by Inter!

As were a further four (Ferrari, Ferraris II, Locatelli and Meazza again) for the FIFA World Cup victory in France four years later.

The exceptional inside right forward, Giuseppe Meazza, scorer of 283 goals in 408 official matches for Inter, stands out to this day as an exceptional striker and man. In 1979, a year after his death, the San Siro was renamed in his honour, with the agreement of the derby occupant AC Milan, despite the strong rivalry between the two clubs.

The Moratti family has also had incredible contributions for Inter Milan. Under the chairmanship of Angelo Moratti (1955 to 1968) the Nerazzurri performed exceptionally on pitches around the world lifting 3 Scudetti, 2 European Cups and 1 Intercontinental Cups.

His son Massimo, who took over from 18 February 1995, displays similar dedication for the cause today.

Another name that would be associated with Inter is Helenio Herrera. While his playing career was unremarkable, Il Mago (The Magician) won an incredible lot of trophies as one of the world’s most successful coaches.

As at 7 March 2008: With 18 wins, 7 draws and only 1 lost match so far this season, Inter are on the way to lift their 3rd consecutive and 16th ever league title.

Inter Milan has gone from rags to riches in the past 100 years, they’ve achieved what all clubs wish to and strive to achieve!

Only time will tell what Inter has in store for us in the next 100 years
