Tips for Goal Keepers

The main player in the team is the goal keepers. If your opponent has scored a lot of goals then it’s useless to play. Do defense comes first. Here are some tips for people who are trying to improve their goal keeping skills.s

ANGLES, ANGLES, ANGLES
Being a goalie require you to know about angles. When in the net you want to give them the least amount of net to shoot at, but also allow yourself to cover the net. That’s why when goalies are one on one with a player they come out of the net- to cut down the angle that they have- or why most goalies don’t play right on their line- they play between the line and the 6 yard box- Get out in front of the net and look around and see how when you move to different spots it changes the angle- better yet- get a friend to stand in the net and you pretend to be a player, ask your friend to move around so you can see how the angles are effected- coming out of your net cuts down on the angle- but of course you have to be careful how far you come out or else you may get it chipped over your head and other stuff like that

READING PLAYERS
The poster before me mentioned that people normally look to where they are going to shoot before they do- this works a decent amount of the time, but with top notch players they learn not to do that- so what else can you do?
Look at their non kicking foot and their hip area- normally(not always) the direction their non-kicking foot is placed is the direction the ball will go in- of course they could use the outer side of their foot and it would go the other direction, but… it may help ya a lil
Same with their hip area- look to see which way that is facing and it may tell you where the ball is going

DIVING
You want to land on your side and bring the ball in to your body- bring it in to your stomach and keep it there. Normally if the goalie has any sort of control of the ball other players aren’t suppose to kick it- or the goal may be called back if they do- so try and get to it somehow-

CORNER KICKS- OR HIGH BALLS
Corner kicks are always fun, haha. You should have your defenders covering the posts- you want to be in between the goal line and the 6 yard box- now… When the balls kicked if you can go out and try and catch it or punch it away- remember you can use your hands so you do have an advantage height wise- if it’s too far out then just be ready for a shot- learning how far you can go is a lot of times a personal thing- I’ve seen some goalies go out pretty far- if you think u can get it, be aggressive- but make sure you get some piece of it- also when jumping up- bring your need up in front of you- this is legal and protects you from getting hurt

PENALTY KICKS
Now… first off- penalty kicks should be made about 90 percent of the time if the kicker is good- so these shots aren’t the easiest to save- depending on the level you are playing at may depend what you do- some goalies like to guess- my advice is that besides if you are playing at a very high level don’t guess- pros may need to, but most of the time u don’t have to- do try and read them and see which way they are going to kick- but don’t dive randomly
Now… The goalie isn’t allowed to move fowards from the line till the ball is kicked- They are allowed to move side to side, just not forward. So… Keep your feet moving- even if you aren’t moving a lot- just make sure you are on your toes and ready- Personally what I do is just as the player is going to kick take a step or two forward- this again has to do angles-and it gets you moving- now be careful that you don’t come off to early or you will get called for it and they will get a re-kick if it wasn’t scored- but most reffs will allow you to come off a second to a half second early

If you want to become a better goalie- get out and have people kick at you- that’s my advice- right now I haven’t played outdoor for 2 years- but I played before that for as long as I know, and I have still played indoor- I’m getting ready to try out for the college I’m going to be attending- HCCC- 5 time NJCAA champions- so I’m trying to get in shape- etc… Just get out working out- practicing all types of situations- practice getting back up quickly after shots- etc… practice corner kicks- pk’s, headers, everything-

Get yourself in shape- that’s what I’m trying to do now- it is physically demanding- and you do need to be in shape
