David Beckham delighted after playing his 100th match for the England team

David Beckham finally won his 100th cap today in a friendly match. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star was in the starting line up today. England face France at Stade de France in Paris today (Wednesday 26 March 2008) where David Beckham won his 100th cap for England.
David Beckham played his favourite right wing mid field position. He was shown yellow card for a foul on Franck Ribery and he was substituted by David Bentley after 63 minutes.
The captain of England, Rio Ferdinand, pays tribute to David Beckham for his 100th cap.
He gave his captain band to his old Manchester United team-mate before the start of the match as a tribute.
Rio Ferdinand said: “Not many players get to play 100 times for their country so it is a huge honour, He has never stopped working hard, he has been a great servant and he fully deserves to win his 100th cap.”
Rio Ferdinand added: “Five players in the history of English football have managed that. He is with some illustrious names, some icons of the sport and he is a worthy member of that list.”
David Beckham joined Billy Wright, Sir Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore and Peter Shilton after becoming the fifth player to reach 100th caps for England.
David Beckham made his England debut in 1996. He became captain in 2000 and led his country on 58 occasions. He has played in three World Cup finals - in 1998, 2002 and 2006.
Will David Beckham surpass Shilton’s record of 125 caps for England? It is uncertain with what’s currently going on but David Beckham feels he’ll make it to the FIFA World Cup 2010.
On this, Beckham added: “I would love to play and be part of the squad in 2010. But I’m taking it as it comes - who knows what is round the corner?”
He said: “The combination of the players and the combination of manager and staff is setting us up right for the qualification games for the World Cup.”
However, the former England and Newcastle United star, Alan Shearer said that Beckham is unlikely to make it to the 2010 World Cup. He told BBC Radio: “It will be very tough for him to get to the next World Cup. I do not expect Beckham to be in any England squads after this one. He is not playing in a great league, which may work against him, but it’s up to David to keep impressing the new manager.”
He added: “We’ve found out that the new manager is not going to pick players on reputation. So it will be a big ask for him to still be playing, but we’ve said it many times before about David Beckham, so I wouldn’t write him off.”
Beckham was initially left out by the new coach Steve McClaren in the friendly match against Switzerland.
Beckham said: “It is not about ‘have your 100th game and then retire’. It is about carrying on trying to play well for my country. I never thought a year ago or two years ago that I would make 95 caps, never mind 100.’
“I’m honoured that I’m making my 100th appearance in an England shirt but I’m also honoured to be doing it against one of the best teams in the world.”
Whatever the critics have to say about the star of football, the England supporters in Paris for the game signed a giant congratulations card for Beckham.
