Veteran French international Robert Pires has agreed to a one-year extension to his contract with Spanish first division side Villarreal, the club announced on Thursday.

The 34-year-old midfielder’s current contract took him through to the end of this season in June but he had made it clear he wanted to stay on for another year.

A member of the French squad that won the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship, Pires joined Villarreal from Arsenal in May, 2006, but his first season in Spain was marred by injury.

He has been in top form this year, however, helping the small-town side into third place in the first division with nine games to go until the end of the season and just six points behind leader Real Madrid.

“Money is not what matters most,” Pires said. “For me, I just want to feel comfortable with where I am in the years that are left to me and the same goes for my family.”
