The Term “DERBY”

In football jargon the term “Derby” means a sporting fixture between two (generally local) rivals, particularly in association football. In simple words, Its more like two teams of the same city playing a match together. So both teams have the advantage of home crowd.

Here is a list of some Derby matches played in the EPL:

* North London derby - Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur
* Merseyside derby - Liverpool vs Everton. Tranmere Rovers sometimes included during cup ties
* Manchester derby - Manchester United vs Manchester City
* Tyne-Wear derby - Newcastle United vs Sunderland
* Steel City derby - Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday
* Birmingham derby - Games between Aston Villa and Birmingham City. Occasionally used incorrectly to refer to games between the previous two clubs and West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
* South Coast derby - Southampton vs Portsmouth
