Man Utd lose Fletcher to injury

Everton’s Tim Cahill looks set to miss the rest of the season after suffering a reoccurrence of a long-standing foot injury.

Cahill was forced to leave the field after just 10 minutes in last Saturday’s 1-1 draw against West Ham United. The attacking midfielder also had to miss the Australia’s midweek international versus China. And there are now fears that Cahill has aggravated a metatarsal fracture he suffered last March.

Another Injury for Arsenal

Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has been ruled out for at least three weeks with an ankle injury.

Sagna headed Arsenal in front at Stamford Bridge last Sunday before collecting the knock prior to Didier Drogba’s double for the Blues.

The defender was forced to pull out of the France squad to face England on Wednesday night and could even be out for up to five weeks.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: “The first news that we have is that he could be out for quite a while. I have seen it again. He wanted to kick the ball out and he twisted his ankle. That made it a bad injury.”

Sagna is now likely to miss Arsenal’s triple header with Liverpool in the Premier League and Champions League at the beginning of April also the weekend match against Bolton.

He could also miss the Gunners’ crucial trip to Manchester United on 13 April.

The right-back has featured on a regular basis for Arsenal this season after signing from French side Auxerre in the summer.

Ruud van Nistelrooy to undergo ankle surgery

Ruud van NistelrooyReal Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is to have arthroscopic surgery for a problem with his right ankle, with reports suggesting he could be out for the remainder of the season.

Van Nistelrooy has missed Real’s last four matches in all competitions with a persistent swelling around the ankle joint and was absent from today’s training session.

The club do not know exactly how long he will be out of action, though his presence at Euro 2008 is unlikely to be threatened.

The 31-year-old has scored 12 league goals for Real this season and his absence will be a major setback as they close in on a second consecutive Primera Liga title.

Real currently lead second-placed Barcelona by seven points, with 10 matches remaining.

Newcastle´s Given sidelined for six weeks

Shay GivenNewcastle will be without first-choice goalkeeper Shay Given for most of what remains of the season following surgery to repair a groin injury.

Given, who has not played in almost a month, went under the knife in Germany for an operation carried out by the same hernia specialist who saved Michael Owen’s career.

In a statement, Newcastle said Given was expected to make a full recovery but would be out of action for six weeks.

The Ireland international has been been blighted by groin problems since a collision with then West Ham striker Marlon Harewood left him with a perforated bowel in September 2006.
